Hawaii: Shopping for Art and Fabric

While we’re on vacation we love checking out the local art at art fairs and farmers’ markets. Today I wanted to share a couple of the places we enjoyed on our recent trip to Hawaii.

What a surprise when I found out that we’d be in Kona during the Kona Art Crawl. Of course, this was no surprise to Dave; he had planned it that way!! We always try to catch art fairs when we travel, and this is one of our favorites.

The last time we were here several years ago it was so hot. This day the weather was perfect. In addition to all of the art, you could hear music up and down the street.

We enjoyed looking around and then we found Liz Crowley and her beautiful pottery.

She was so sweet, answering all of our questions about her art. She’s originally from Ireland, but has been in Hawaii for some time. She said she’s just started selling at markets again. Dave and I both bought a mug from her.  Mine is my favorite for my morning tea.

We also visited Ho’oulu Community Farmers and Artisan Market.

I really love this setting – on the grass.

We found an artist we liked, Stefanie Culbertson Thennes of Tiffany Arts Designs.

We loved her turtles and Geckos, so we purchased these to add to our collection.

While in Kona, I had to stop by my favorite fabric store, Kimura Fabrics in Kealakekua.

The store is almost 100 years old. The woman waiting on me is the granddaughter of the owner. They have such a wide variety of fabric and other interesting stuff.

I don’t buy very much commercial fabric anymore, but love going here and picking up some white-on-white fabric I can dye, and a Hawaiian print.

We also bought other art at a couple galleries. It’s nice to support the local artists and bring a little of Hawaii back with us.

Next post will be a tutorial. I’ve been having a lot of fun working on those 40 flags. Hope you’ll come back and check it out.
