The Artful Bird

If you are interested in creating your own bird sculptures by using your basic sewing, embroidery, and mixed media techniques using those left over scraps, you will love this book.

In this newly-published book by Abigail Patner Glassenberg, she teaches crafters how they can create their own birds through 16 creative projects from owls and wrens and cute chicks to flamingos and swooping cranes in flight. This book really takes soft toy making into a new direction, transforming the idea of a sewn toy into a sculptural form to be displayed as artwork.

Her first two chapters cover the materials and tools needed and the basic birdmaking techniques. About her techniques Glassenberg says, “When you’ve mastered these methods, you’ll have a foundation for making all of the patterns or for designing and creating your own original birds.”

Each project contains step-by-step sewing instructions complete with pattern pieces (all grouped together in the back of the book) and beautiful pictures. The author also offers ideas to give each bird it’s own character and personality. Sidebars throughout the book help readers take their birdmaking to the next level. Ideas include hand-dying fabrics, and using recycled and “found fabrics” (such as clothing labels and flour sacks).

She also includes a gallery chapter with profiles of other fabric bird makers and pictures of their work for inspiration.

Doll and toy makers, quilters, mixed-media artists and really anyone who likes birds and is interested in expanding their creativity with fabric will enjoy creating these little works of art.
