The Printed Pattern

This is a great basic book of principles of stamping and printing patterns on paper, fabric and more.

This mother/daughter team takes the reader step-by-step on creating original stamp, stencil, and screen designs. They begin by teaching how to create mood boards, color schemes, and how to experiment with composition and scale for effective design.

The Relief chapter includes potato, lino, rubber eraser, rubber stamp, and vintage woodblock printing. They also cover stencil and four different screen printing techniques. The back of the book includes templates of their designs to be used for making stencils.

Each process is explained in detail with pictures and tips on working with different materials. The layout of the book is easy on the eyes, which isn’t always the case with some of the artsy books these days.

If you’ve been deep into stamping and printing on fabric, you already know most of what is in this book. However, if you have been wanting to dive into printing on fabric, this is a great introduction to the art.
