Fabric Birthday Card

Last year I had lost contact with Ginny, my mom’s penpal and friend. More about her and my quest to find her on this post.

Well, her 95th birthday is coming up next week and I wanted to make something special for her so I made her a fabric card.

I started with some dyed fabric from a long ago quilt guild dyeing session and cut it into two 5 x 8 pieces making the front and back of the card. For batting I used flannel which I also cut 5 x 8.

I used Modge Podge for fabric to glue the flannel to the fabric.

I then placed the flannel on top of the fabric.

Now it’s time to decorate the two sides of the card. I had cut a couple roses from another fabric, added batting and then did some free motion stitching. After completed I cut them out to put on this card. I cut lace from a handkerchief and used binding I had bought years ago at a thrift store. It was so neat making this card with stuff I already had. I also printed Ginny and Happy Birthday on fabric and cut and sewed to the card.

I zig zag stitched around the complete outside of the sides. To put them together, I layered wrong sides together, straight stitched around the complete card and added lace. I also sewed a straight stitch down the center of the card making it easier to fold.

Well, I thought I was finished, but the white lace on the edges just seemed to take away from the whole card. It was shouting – please do something with me before you put this in the mail!

Then I thought about those Distress Inks I have and added several drops to water and sprayed on the lace. I use deli tissue to prevent ink from spraying over the complete card.

And here is the finished card.

It was so much fun making this for Ginny. Using the flannel as the batting gave the card a really nice feel. I’d love to see her face when she receives this. I believe there are more fabric cards in my future.
