While on the Big Island in January, almost every morning we’d go for a walk. On one of those walks I found these amazing pods and just had to bring them home to play on fabric.

They are very hard – a pod like I’ve never seen. They are also BIG! So first I used one of them as a rubbing plate.

I rubbed the paintstik over the seed pod and came up with this on my light purple hand dyed fabric.

But that wasn’t enough. I took out that rubbing plate I made a while back and played with it covering the paintstik rubbing. (I did let the paintstik dry three days, iron, and then wash before I took that step.)
Then a little more paint and I’m done.

Then I wanted to try using the seed pod as a stamp. For my March art journal I primed my canvas cover with gesso and then painted it yellow. After that dried I then took the pod and cut it into a smaller size.

Next I painted it with purple paint and stamped the canvas.

I was really planning on using this as the inside of the cover but I really like it. So I’ll probably use it for the outside. Now to work on the inside and add the pages. I better get going. March is almost here!
Totally awesome, Lynda!!! When I saw the first picture, my thought was to lay three of the pods out, take a photograph and have it made into a permanent screen. I hope you have good photos. Love love love the rubbing. These pods are extremely cool.

Ooh, Kathy I like the idea of making them into a permanent screen. However I did already cut one up but I could photoshop another one in the pic. Hum! What a great idea!
This was the first time I used paintstik and they really stink!

So fun!!! Love the pattern the pod makes. How great that you brought one home to play with.

Totally cool picture. Thank you for sharing, I never thought that Hawaiian seed pod can be used for crafting.
I looked for your blog for a long time yesterday after seeing some comments on yahoo; never did find it, but this morning there you are with a comment on my blog. Coincidence or serendipity??? Anyway, your pages are wonderful; guess I will be ordering the Blick watercolors! Going to miss this class.
