The Violet Protest Project

I mentioned in the last post that I was participating in the Violet Protest Project. Here are my finished pieces.

The Violet Protest is a public effort to send 50 hand-made textile squares to each and every member of Congress in support of these core American values: Respect for the other, Citizenship, Compassion, Country over party and corporate concern, Courage, Candor, Compassion, and Creativity. It’s about seeing us as one country – not red or blue states.

It’s due in the mail February 1, but it’s doable if you want to join in. All you need is red and blue fabric (I had to dye some since I didn’t have any!) and make a minimum of five 8 x 8 inch finished blocks. Or if you are a knitter, you can knit the squares just as long as you use the two colors. There are some great ideas from those blocks on the website that have already been received.

For the first two I decided to do the reverse applique. I started with layering the two fabrics on top of a piece of batting.

Then I sewed them together with lines of stitching.

This is how one of them looked.

Then I needed to cut to show the red fabric.

And the finished top with those sweet scissors.

I then backed the squares with cut up jean fabric, and zigzagged the edges.

Here are the backs of the squares.

The other three squares were sewn and pieced with the technique I used to make those scrap cards. Instead of batting I used Craftfuse. They were also backed with old jean fabric.

I received my labels in the mail the day I got these done, sewed on the labels, and put them in the mail. Here is my set again.

I don’t know if it will do anything to heal our divide, but it made me feel better. I’ve also continued to work on the SAQA CoronART quilt. I finally got the fabric background cut and sewn together. It was so hard to cut the fabric especially since I had just enough to complete this project! I’m really getting excited about this project now!

Next Friday I’ll be taking Scroll Stores, an online class with Libby Williamson. I am so excited. I’ve wanted to take this class for years, and because Craft Napa has gone online, I can attend! Yeah! I bought the spool over a year ago in hopes I would someday take her class. Other stuff is supplies from her kit. I’ve been thinking about my theme, and hope to have it finalized before class starts.

That’s all for today. I’m off to take my walk, and then spend this afternoon on my CoronArt piece. Hope you are having a day full of peace and love. If not, I am sending it to you.
