Back in December 2022 I purchased a couple Hanes womens Slub Jersey fashion hoodies on Amazon for ice dyeing. I finally got around to dyeing one of them last week. I’m using three out of the four muck dyes I bought back in 2018.
These hoodies are light weight, perfect for spring and fall. They also have a texture that looks like linen. I look forward to dyeing the other ones I bought.
When the ice melted I looked at the shirt and decided it didn’t have enough blue. I put ice over the part I wanted more blue, and mixed up the dye with soda ash water and poured over the area. I added soda ash water to the dye since the mordant in the jacket had probably already expired. Adding it to the dye assured me that it would stick to the jacket.
Here is the end result after washing and drying.
It’s pretty but way too much yellow for me. Also, I didn’t like how the sleeves were darker than the body of the jacket. I put it back into the soda ash solution, and then covered the area in ice where I wanted more blue.
Once the ice melted, I rinsed, washed and dried it and here is the final result.
If I do it again, I would like the blue to drip into the yellow and red instead of almost a straight line. I may even over ice dye this one again.
Meanwhile, I have this old white short shirt/jacket I’ve not worn in years. While I was ice dyeing, it was a perfect candidate.
And the result. Love this jacket now!
So if you ice dye a piece and aren’t happy with it just over ice dye it. You can also print over it or just dye it normally. There are no mistakes. Just have fun! Don’t forget all of my Icy Delights online class videos and pdfs are free and on my YouTube channel.
We just returned from a short trip to Cumberland Lake, Kentucky where we hiked and spent time with my ex brother-in-law and his wife. They got me to face my fear and get on a horse. I did and it was so much fun. This was at the start when I was really scared. By the end of the 45 minute trail ride, I was having a great time with Oreo. Isn’t he beautiful? I also wore my new hoodie on this trip.
The four of us.
Steve loves cherry pie so I made one for our trip.
What a lovely trip, and I’ve so enjoyed reconnecting with Steve after so many years, and his wonderful wife Sharon. More art coming. If you’d like to see what I’m writing about that’s not art related, check out Heines Sight on substack. Keep cool!

I’m happy to see you playing with ice dyeing again, Lynda! And I’m so glad you had a nice trip and visit with your ex-bil and his wife. I’m looking forward to seeing more ice dyeing posts from you in the future… happy dyeing!
Thank you for sharing your over-dye / re-dye experiences, Lynda! Over the past several months I have been “addressing” some of my early t-shirt dye endeavors that were … well, less than satisfactory! In a few cases I ice-dyed over ice-dye. With other Ts I single color immersion dyed over ice-dye, which has resulted in some interesting muted variable colors. Even with a soda-ash soak, however, single-color dye over ice-dye has not resulted in the depth of color I expected. Do the fibers have a limited capacity for absorbing color? Oh, well, they didn’t turn out as I had hoped but I still like them better than what I had before the over-dye. Either way, the serendipity of Procion dyeing is what brings me back time and again! Thanks for continuing to help feed my obsession!
I love your jackets! I also love ice dying but haven’t done any in awhile. One of my favorites was a high quality long sleeve T that I got at Goodwill. It is my gardening shirt.
I love every version of the hoodie. 🙂 Looks like I need to add white cotton t-shirt/shirt/hoodie/jacket to my thrift list. My latest ice dye is a custom piece of Aida for a SAL. I LOVE it.
Glad you had a nice visit, and fun with Oreo.
Judy, Gosh I love those hoodies. Thanks for the suggestion. It was fun. I’ll be doing more ice dyeing for sure. Yes, loved our trip.
Jane, Yes, the fibers have limited space for dye. So if you fill them up, then they won’t dye. Glad you tried dyeing and over-ice dyeing to fix those shirts. I have overdyed with indigo which I really liked. They are my favorite shirts now! Here is a post where I showed my before and after. If you’ve not tried it, you might like the results. https://lyndaheines.com/2019/08/24/over-dyeing-with-indigo/
Norma, it sounds like it’s time for you to get the ice and dyes out! Most of my ice-dyed projects are from thrift stores, but I thought I’d like to try this one, and it was really inexpensive. The price has increased $5 since I bought it!
KJ, I normally buy from thrift stores, but a fellow dyer and friend, Judy Sall, recommended I try these hoodies. I bet that piece of Aida is beautiful! Yes, we did have fun and Oreo was so gentle and kind with me!
Thanks – like the over dyeing.
Janet, Thanks! And thanks for stopping by and commenting.
