As I mentioned earlier, my interview with Karen really inspired me to felt. And what better project than to felt our homemade soap! However, if you want to do this, you can use any soap bar you have around the house.

For this project you will need the following supplies:
- Bar of soap
- Wool roving
- Knee high hose or panty hose
- Bowl of hot water
- Towel

So let’s felt soap!
Start by covering the soap bar completely in the wool roving. Covering round soaps is a little easier, but regular-shaped soap bars can be felted as long as you cover all of the corners.

With gift giving season approaching, if you are looking for crafts to make with your family, this is fun and easy. These wet felted soaps make great gifts for teachers, friends, or family members.
For those not familiar with felted soap, you use it in the shower or tub by itself. The felting replaces a washcloth or sponge. It’s so soft on the skin. Here I’m using it at the sink.

Eventually the soap will be gone and you’ll be left with the roving. I understand it can be used again to felt soap. I’ll have to try that once this bar is done.
Neat looking project. I am not familiar with felting so have a question. Does the felting stay on to use the soap or is it like packaging and you take it off? Thanks.

Bev, The roving becomes part of the soap so you do NOT try taking it off. It serves as your washcloth or whatever you use with soap in the shower or tub. It’s real soft to the skin. Eventually the soap will be gone and all that is left is the roving. I’ve not done it but understand that the old roving can be refelted on another piece of soap. Good question. I’ll post a picture of using it in the bathroom. Thanks for commenting. Lynda
Very cute idea Lynda! I had the same question as Bev, but you have answered it. I might have to try this for family gifts this year.

Kathy, I updated this post to add that info Bev was asking for at the bottom.
OMG This is so awesome! I have been wondering how this was done ever since I saw felted soaps for sale on Etsy. TYSM for the tut. When you were done, did you notice if you had lost very much of your bar of soap in the felting process? Also, do you think this would work with a bar of glycerin soap since they usually have much less foaming agents in them?
Thanks for the great Christmas present idea!!!!!
Sue, You are so welcome! Lynda
Jana, Great questions! No, I did not lose much soap at all. I don’t know how it would work with glycerin soap since I don’t use them. Try it and let me know!! Thanks for dropping by. Lynda
I reuse my roving by using it for stuffing or to needle felt pincushion. It is such a “clump” it works well for these projects.
Angela, Great ideas!! Thanks. Lynda
