CONGRATS TO BETH T OF OREGON – WINNER OF THIS GIVEAWAY!
I received First-Time Quiltmaking – learning to quilt in six easy lessons recently from Landauer Publishing for review and one of my readers will win it!

From the publisher: One of the most popular introduction-to-quilting on the market is now available in a new soft cover edition. Containing all of the same valuable information, and the same full-color, step-by-step photos, First-Time Quiltmaking is still one of the best learn-to-quilt books available!
First-Time Quiltmaking presents just what a beginner needs to know to get started. First-Time Quiltmaking includes four simple projects for beginners to learn what they need to know to get started and successfully create their first quilt.
The book contains the following six easy lessons:
- Beginning basics
- Preparing the fabric
- Sewing accurate seams
- Assembling the quilt top
- Making the quilt sandwich
- Finishing the quilt
The book also includes a glossary of quiltmaking terms, some first time quilters, and a gallery of first-time quilts.
First of all, the layout of this book is easy on the eyes. This is a biggie for me. Being a former graphic designer, a book can be real pretty but if I have to strain my eyes to read it, it’s worthless.
I also love pictures. There are lots of nice clear pictures showing steps and finished pieces.
The chapters cover everything the reader needs to know and more. For example, in the first chapter on beginning basics it includes fabric tips including shopping for quality, identifying pattern, choosing color, establishing value, finding focus, and recognizing grain. So it’s real complete.
Here is a spread from Lesson 2 on preparing fabric.

And another spread on my favorite (or really what I need help on) on binding in Lesson 6 Finishing the Quilt.

I would have loved to have this book when I was quilting. These are the basics and perfect for those beginners or even some rusty quilters. If you want to make your first quilt, this is an excellent resource to take you step-by-step from beginning to your finished piece.
First-Time Quiltmaker contains 112 pages, retails for $21.95 and available through your favorite bookseller or quilt shop or direct from Landauer Publishing.

This looks like the book I’ve been waiting to find. I’be avoided quilting too long. Thanks.
Ive been wanting to learn to quilt but haven’t pursued as I live a ways from a store and have no car nor access to public transportation. This book for beginners looks like just what I need to get started.
I enjoy reading your blog posts and like your style on so many things. I am a long time crafter and painter, and although I do some sewing I’ve never quilted. I would love to win this book! Thank you!
I agree with your comments about pictures and text in a book. Sometimes I feel like a child, looking for “picture” books! I love good illustrations, and in this type of book, text organized in a way that I don’t have to search for the important information. I figure I can always go back and read in more detail! It depends on how much time I have at the time.
I really enjoy your website Lynda, I am a new follower, enjoy making art, food, and gardening as well and aspire to become a master gardener when my kids get a bit older.
I think I am finally in the right place. I would love to win the book on beginning quilting as I have been thinking of trying it but it looks soooo difficult.
Hope I win as I would really love to learn all about it…
Since my first attempt to quiling without a book like this [without a tutorial at all] has been a complete disaster, I’m looking for a book to learn it step by step because I really want this beautiful fabrics waiting in my closet to turn into a huge quilt for my bed – looks like I finally found the book I need in your blog. Thank you very much 🙂
I can make clothing without a problem…making a quilt…thats a whole different thing…I think this might just be the book I need!
This would make a great gift for my DD! Thanks for the chance!

a great review. my sons girlfriend (soon to be more) has started quilting before she knew my son, but she is confused. This would be great to give to her for christmas.
This is just what I need, for myself and to help me get better at the process. I hope to teach some basic quilting here in Mexico once I feel confident in my abilities. This book would provide the basics plus all the pictures would help with my bad Spanish to show what needs to be done.

I need this book for myself. I’m accumulating a stash of fabrics but haven’t really been brave enough to dive in and actually make a quilt.
Great beginner book! My grand daughter is getting her first sewing machine for Christmas. She would love this book.
I am a newbie (just began quilting this summer) and I could use a printed reference of the basics – kind of learning via the “inner webs.” 😉 Thanks for the chance
