Congratulations to Beverly in Utah and Laurie in California. I’ll be mailing out your QA issues next week!
Dave and I just returned from a wonderful week in Colorado. I’m anxious to tell you about it and some of what inspired me while there, but while I was gone the new issue of Quilting Arts came in the mail with my article on Ice Dyeing with Resists.
Since I have my own subscription and they send me several extra issues, I’d like to give two copies away. In addition to my article, there is so much to learn and be inspired from this issue. See giveaway information below.
My five-page article lists my steps to using soy wax and Lumi Cleanline Resist with ice dyeing.
Here are some of my fabrics. These first three pieces are using the Lumi Cleanline Resist. It doesn’t give a strong a resist due to all of the melted ice water that sits on it, but still gives a nice, almost muted, background. I’ve used this resist before. You can see how I used it here.
Then we have the soy wax pieces. The first and third pieces are made with potato mashers. The middle piece’s design is made with a can dipped in the wax.
But my favorite of all of the soy wax ones was this one. I used a paint brush to apply wax and then ice dyed with Raspberry and Forest Green. I love how the colors broke out so nicely.
Now for the giveaway: All you need to do is comment on this post. Be sure to leave an email for me to get back with you to get your address. I will be picking the winners by random.org. Due to the high costs of postage, this giveaway is only good for those in the US and Canada. Deadline to comment is Friday, September 25.
See you soon with some inspiration from Colorado and some news on my upcoming classes. Thanks for dropping by.
Congratulations Lynda! I don’t really want to think about snow yet, but this winter I may try the ice dying and snow dying. But right now, I want to enjoy the sun shine and warmth!!
A local friend was just telling me about this article and invited me over to play with the techniques. I can’t wait to see the article. Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy.

Hope you had an awesome vacation Lynda! Would love to have a copy!
Love the colors in these pieces… If I don’t win the magazine I guess I’m going to have to buy it! Lol
I really am going to have to try this….
My QA arrived yesterday and your’s was the first story I read. I really want to give this a try. Thank you for sharing your tips and techniques, both in writing and here on your blog.
Ooh! Never thought of ice dyeing and soy wax or other resists… definitely want to read the article, so add me to the drawing please!
I already subscribe to this fabulous magazine, so I do not need to win. I am now really looking forward to getting that issue: I’ve ice-dyed before and have been thinking about soy wax–but of course not together! Love your photos and the way you share your process.
I love ice and snow dyeing, but have never thought to add resists. What a spectacular idea!
Congrats on the magazine article! I get the magazine so I don’t need to be in the drawing but just wanted to let you know I am inspired by your posts and one day I will get my dye out and play too!
Great! Looks like so much fun. Can’t wait to try layering!
Congratulations..these fabrics look fabulous. I figure that with the amount of snow we get where I live I should start taking advantage of it!!

What beautiful pieces! Quilting Arts is my favorite magazine. A copy of the current one would be fabulous!! Thanks
Congrats on your article!
Thank you for sharing so much inspiring and useful information in your blog. And thank you for sharing your surplus of Quilting Arts magazines.
I already subscribe and loved your article but I need to get an extra copy or two soon since one of my quilts is in the Quilt Alliance article
Love the raspberry ones. I love ice dying and am looking to try soy wax for resist and have not tried the clear line. Thanks for sharing these techniques with us!
Congratulations on your article. Love to ice dye fabric. Will be doing some in a few weeks with friends.
Wow hope I can find time to experiment with this too.
I, too, like how the dyes, in the raspberry and forest green piece, broke out. The others are putting the ‘bee in my bonnet’ to try some resist with my next ice dye workday.
Thanks for an opportunity to perhaps win the magazine with your article in it.
Keep up the inspiration!!

I received my copy and I’m so happy for you! It’s a wonderful article and I hope to see more in the future!
Wow, awesome dying!
Will comment even though I can’t win. Never tried ice/snow dyeing but it’s on my list – have tried resist dyeing but not with soya wax although I have got some just not got round to it yet. Thanks for the tips.
Just saw your ice dying article in Quilting Arts Issue 77. It’s fabulous and so pretty, I want to try it. I’d like to know what colors you used on pg 16 with the can print. And what colors did you use on pg 17. Thanks so much! I am an hour and a half northwest of Chicago. If you ever teach at a local show, let me know in advance!
Hi Debbie! Thank you! For the can print on page 16 I used ProChem Blue 400 and ProChem Nickel. On page 17 that is Dharma Brushed Steel. I sure will.
I usually pick up a copy of Quilting Arts when I am in Florida. Congratulations on being featured in the magazine. Ice dying is something on my todo list, after all we get plenty of snow here. I have tried sun printing and my favourite is flower pounding.
Hi, I love your article on ice dying. Your fabrics turned out beautifully.
A friend received her copy of QA which she let me look over and now I am really so anxious to give your technique a try!!! Thank you for the opportunity for a free copy of the magazine.
You already know I am a huge fan! Looking forward to reading your article! Thanks for the opportunity with the Give Away. Nice of you!!

Debra, Thanks. I’m a huge fan of your work too!
Denise, Thanks!
Ally, Thanks. I’ve been meaning to do some flower pounding this summer but it just didn’t happen. I also love sun printing.
Allison, Thanks!
Michelle, You are so welcome. I’m sorry! You must try ice dyeing. If you can buy ice at a local convenience center or have an icemaker, you can do it any time.
Diane, Thanks!
Dawn, Thanks. YOUR skills are amazing! We still need to get together for that art date.
Luann, Love to put a bee in your bonnet!!
Barbara, You will be happy when you do find the time!
Jean, Great! Would love to see what your group does.
Ruby, You are so welcome. I think you will like how the soy wax gives the ice dyeing another layer. I like the Cleanline too but it’s more subtle.
Lisa, Well, that’s cool about your quilt. Love Olive!!
Monica, Thank you for dropping by and reading.
Diane, Thanks!
Sue, Thanks! Good Luck!
Marsha, Thanks! You don’t have to wait. You can always buy some ice at the local gas station or make it yourself if you have an ice maker. That’s how ice dyeing came to be when I didn’t have any snow, I found ice worked and is always available!
Cathy, Thanks!
Those pieces are gorgeous! I’ve done some ice dyeing with good results, but never thought of using soy wax with it. Good thing I still have quite a bit in my studio!

Thanks you the pretty projects to get me inspired. I was just thinking it was time to start planning for snow dyeing projects…and I have that type of meal containers.
Hi Beverly, Thanks! I love soy wax!
Hi Lynda,
Congratulations on this wonderful piece in Quilting Arts. I’m anxious to try soy wax resist.
Hi Connie, Thanks! We will need to get together to play again. I’ve got plenty of soy wax.
Hi Lynda ~ I sure wish I lived closer to you! I’d be sure to sign up for your fun classes. I’d love to play with Ice Dying. ~ Laurie in California
Laurie, We’d have fun! Thanks for commenting.
